Electric Branders

Electric branders Horse, Cow or Calf will take 2 to 5 minutes to heat to its potential when first plugged in give it that time to heat up before starting the branding. This will ensure that you achieve a good distinct brand. Clipping excess hair is advisable when hair is extremely long. Apply brander on animal; ( rock up and then down or apply even pressure) then remove this should take all of about 5 seconds. A touch up may be required which is better than applying the brander for too long. Applying the brander for too long will result in blotched brand that is unreadable. Branded area should be a saddle brown color.

Cleaning of Brander

When branding, it is recommended that the brander be LIGHTLY cleaned with a wire brush ( between each brand) to keep it clean. A build up of hair and ashes on the element will cause the brand to blotch and work efficiently. Always remember if using an extension cord that it is heavy enough to power up your brand to light of a cord will cause insufficient heat for branding.

Basics of Freeze Branding

Freeze branding is a technique in which a super cold brander when properly applied to the animals hide kills the pigment producing cells. The result is that white hair grows back at the branded site. Freeze branding is effective on both cows and horses. The brand can be easily read any time of the year.

LIQUID NITROGEN METHOD – is a very good refrigerant and will cool and recool your Irons faster than dry ice method.

HAIR CLIPPERS – A clippers is an absolute necessity for this type of branding.A manual clipper may be used but a electric one is almost a must if your considering doing a large number of animals.

METHOD- Use room temperature alcohol and a grooming brush clean the branding area of all foreign matter. Immediately before applying the iron again saturate the area to be branded with room temperature alcohol . It is important that this area is wet when applying the brand . Apply the iron to the area with even pressure and make sure the iron is in full contact with hide.Lack of pressures or uneven pressure will result in a poor brand. Hold the iron on the hide at least 30 to 40 seconds on calves, 40 to 50 seconds on cows and 30 to 35 seconds on horses. Immediately after the brand has been lifted from the hide this area will appear frozen and in several hours the area will become swollen as in frost bite. In abouttwenty two daysafter the branding the hair where the brand was applied will have completely fallen out and the brand can be read. White hair will appear on the brand site in two to three months. However it is known that a cow has 2 hair cycles spring and fall. For this reason it has been experienced that cows branded in the middle of winter did not grow hair back on the branded area till spring.
